What Can an Ontario Pharmacist Prescribe? The Common-Conditions List

Since Ontario expanded pharmacists' scope of practice, a licensed pharmacist can assess and - when clinically appropriate - prescribe for a growing list of common minor ailments, without a doctor or referral. Here's a plain-language overview.

Common conditions a pharmacist can treat

These include, among others: urinary tract infections (UTIs), pink eye (conjunctivitis), cold sores, impetigo and other minor skin infections, hay fever and allergic rhinitis, mild acne, eczema and dermatitis, insect bites and hives, tick bites, canker sores, oral thrush, acid reflux/heartburn, hemorrhoids, menstrual cramps, nausea in pregnancy, pinworms, yeast infections, and more. How the pharmacist decides

Prescribing isn't automatic. The pharmacist reviews your symptoms, history, allergies and medications, and prescribes only when it's the right call. Sometimes the best answer is an over-the-counter product, self-care, or a referral - and they'll tell you honestly which it is.

What still needs a doctor

Anything outside the minor-ailment list, severe or worsening symptoms, or red flags identified during the assessment will be referred to a physician or urgent care. Emergencies always need 911 or an emergency department.

Cost and access

Assessments are free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Everything is done online - no appointment, no family doctor, no waiting room.
