Warts on the hands, feet or body are caused by a common virus and can be stubborn. In Ontario you don't need a doctor's appointment to deal with them - common warts (including plantar warts on the soles) are a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess and treat online, when appropriate.

What a pharmacist can treat

A pharmacist can assess common warts on your hands, feet and body and, when suitable, prescribe or recommend proven treatments - for example salicylic-acid wart products at strengths that work faster than most drugstore options, along with guidance on how to use them properly so the wart actually clears.

When you'll be referred instead

Some warts need in-person care and the assessment screens for them: warts on the face, genitals, or on/around a nail; diabetes, poor circulation or reduced feeling in the area; a weakened immune system; many or spreading warts; signs of infection; a spot that is changing, bleeding or doesn't look like a typical wart; or a wart you've already treated for 12 weeks or more without success.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Warts assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.

Common questions

Can a pharmacist treat warts in Ontario?

Yes. Common and plantar warts are on Ontario's minor-ailments list, so a licensed pharmacist can assess them and, when appropriate, prescribe or recommend treatment without a doctor.

What about a wart on my face or under a nail?

Those are outside the minor-ailment scope and should be seen in person - the online assessment will let you know and point you to the right care.

Is it free?

Yes, with a valid Ontario health card. Without one it is a flat $30.
