Walk-In Clinic Wait Too Long? What a Pharmacist Can Treat Instead

Walk-in clinics in Ontario are stretched, and "walk-in" can mean a three-hour wait or a "we are full for today" sign on the door. For a large set of everyday conditions, there is a faster route that skips the waiting room entirely.

What a pharmacist can handle

Ontario pharmacists can now assess and prescribe for 28 minor ailments (as of July 2026). If your reason for going to the walk-in is one of these, you can likely be assessed from home instead:

• Urinary tract infection, yeast infection, menstrual cramps
• Pink eye, hay fever, dry eye, nasal congestion
• Cold sores, canker sores, oral thrush, impetigo
• Acid reflux and heartburn, hemorrhoids, pinworms
• Insect bites and hives, eczema and dermatitis, ringworm, jock itch, warts
• Mild headache, sprains and strains, tick-bite (Lyme) prevention, and more

When the walk-in or ER is still the right call

Some things genuinely need in-person assessment: possible fractures, chest pain, breathing trouble, high fever, severe pain, or anything rapidly worsening. Minor ailment care is for mild, straightforward cases - if your situation is beyond that, a pharmacist will tell you and point you to the right level of care. For emergencies, call 911.
