Most everyday headaches are tension-type - a dull, tight, band-like ache, often from stress, screens, posture or poor sleep. In Ontario, mild tension headache is a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess online, so you can get sensible guidance and rule out anything serious.

What a pharmacist can help with

For recurring mild tension-type headaches, a pharmacist can assess your pattern and, when appropriate, advise on the safe and effective use of pain relievers (such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen), suggest prevention strategies, and spot medication-overuse headache - a common trap when painkillers are used too often.

When you'll be referred instead

Headaches sometimes signal something serious, and the assessment screens carefully for it: a sudden "worst-ever" (thunderclap) headache, fever with a stiff neck, any weakness, numbness, speech or vision changes, a recent head injury, a headache that wakes you or worsens when you strain, a first/worst/changed pattern, new headaches after age 50, or frequent painkiller use. Any of these means in-person care - and emergencies need 911.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Mild headache assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.

Common questions

Can a pharmacist treat headaches in Ontario?

For mild tension-type headaches, yes - a licensed Ontario pharmacist can assess them and advise on treatment. Warning-sign or severe headaches are referred for in-person care.

What if I take painkillers most days?

That can actually cause "rebound" headaches. A pharmacist can help you recognise it and make a plan - it's one of the most useful things this assessment catches.
