Oral Thrush After Antibiotics? Get Assessed Online in Ontario

White patches, soreness and a dulled sense of taste often follow antibiotics or inhaler use. An Ontario pharmacist can assess oral thrush online.

Creamy white patches on the tongue, inner cheeks or roof of the mouth, a sore or cottony feeling, and food that suddenly tastes like nothing - that combination is usually oral thrush, a yeast overgrowth. It shows up most often after a course of antibiotics, with a steroid inhaler, with a dry mouth, or under dentures. In Ontario, oral thrush is a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for online.

Can a pharmacist prescribe for this?

A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your symptoms, recent medications and health history, and when it is clinically appropriate can prescribe treatment. A prescription is never guaranteed - the pharmacist may instead recommend self-care or refer you to a doctor, particularly if something in your history suggests a different cause.

Habits that keep it from coming back

Rinse your mouth with water after using a steroid inhaler, clean and remove dentures overnight, brush twice daily and replace your toothbrush once treatment starts. If dry mouth is the underlying driver, sipping water through the day and reviewing medications that dry you out both help.

When to see a doctor instead

See a doctor if the patches spread to your throat or make swallowing painful, if thrush keeps returning, if you have a weakened immune system, uncontrolled diabetes, or are on chemotherapy, if you are losing weight unintentionally, or if a white or red patch does not clear with treatment - that needs a proper look. An infant or older adult who cannot drink enough to stay hydrated should be seen the same day; trouble breathing is an emergency, so call 911.

How to start

  1. Open the oral thrush assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
  2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews it and follows up within 24 business hours (our average is about 2 hours).
  3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Is it free?

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.

Common questions

Is oral thrush contagious?

It is not generally passed between healthy adults, though a breastfeeding parent and baby can pass it back and forth - in that case both usually need assessing.
