If period cramps regularly leave you curled up with a heating pad, missing work or school, you have more options than toughing it out. In Ontario, menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) are a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for online.

What a pharmacist can treat

A pharmacist can assess typical period pain and, when appropriate, prescribe or recommend more effective relief - for example prescription-strength anti-inflammatories (such as naproxen or mefenamic acid) used correctly around your cycle - plus practical tips that genuinely help.

When you'll be referred instead

The assessment screens for pain that may not be simple cramps: pregnancy or possible pregnancy, a recent pelvic injury, severe or sudden pain, pain only on one side, a lump in the abdomen or pelvis, a recent change in pattern, unusual symptoms (very heavy bleeding, pain or bleeding with sex), or a known cause such as endometriosis, cysts or fibroids. Those are directed to a physician.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Menstrual cramps assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.
