For mild, localized impetigo, a pharmacist can assess it (photos help) and, when appropriate, prescribe a topical antibiotic such as mupirocin or fusidic acid, plus simple steps to stop it spreading to siblings and classmates.

When you'll be referred instead

The assessment screens for cases that need a doctor: more than three patches or one or more large patches, redness that's widespread or spreading quickly, fever or chills, feeling generally unwell, a weakened immune system, or a history of heart-valve disease. Those need in-person care.
