What a pharmacist can treat

When live lice are present, a pharmacist can assess the situation and, when appropriate, prescribe or recommend an effective treatment (such as a permethrin-based product), plus a clear plan for repeat treatment, combing, and checking other household members so it doesn't bounce back.

When you'll be referred instead

The assessment checks a few things first: whether you've actually seen live, moving lice (not just flakes or old eggs); signs of a skin infection from scratching (pus, spreading redness, crusting, fever); or a baby under 2 months old - all of which are better handled in person.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Head lice assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.
