Cutting down your fall exposure

Ragweed pollen counts run highest on dry, breezy mornings. Keep windows shut overnight, run air conditioning on recirculate, shower and change clothes after yard work, and leave raking for a damp, still day. None of this replaces treatment, but it lowers the load.

When to see a doctor instead

Book with a doctor if your symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath, if you have a fever or thick one-sided facial pain suggesting a sinus infection, if one eye is painful with changed vision, or if allergy symptoms are dragging on well past frost. Any sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing, is an emergency - call 911.

Allergies usually mean itchy eyes, sneezing and clear runny nose lasting weeks with no fever. A cold tends to build over a few days and fade within about ten.
