Eczema Flare-Up? How to Get Prescription Treatment Online in Ontario

Anyone who lives with eczema knows the pattern: the itch starts, the skin flares, and the moisturizer that usually keeps things calm suddenly isn't enough. In Ontario you don't have to wait for a doctor's appointment - eczema and dermatitis (atopic, allergic and contact) are minor ailments a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for online.

What a pharmacist can treat

You describe your flare and history in a short questionnaire (photos help a lot), and a licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews it. When appropriate, they prescribe treatment - for example a topical steroid or other prescription cream - to bring the flare under control, and can help you pin down triggers like soaps, fabrics and allergens so flares happen less often.

When you'll be referred instead

The assessment screens for cases that need in-person care: eczema that is severe or covers a large area, with broken, cracked, bleeding or oozing skin; moderate-to-severe patches on the face; signs of infection (pus, crusting, spreading redness, warmth); a rash you think a steroid cream caused; or one that hasn't settled after about two weeks of steroid cream.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Eczema & dermatitis assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.
