Diaper Rash That Won't Clear? Get Assessed Online in Ontario
Barrier cream not touching it? A stubborn diaper rash may be a yeast overgrowth. An Ontario pharmacist can assess it online, without a clinic visit.
Most diaper rash is simple irritation from wetness and friction, and it clears within a few days with frequent changes and a thick barrier cream. What sends parents looking for help is the rash that does not clear - bright red, edged with small spots, tucked into the skin creases. That pattern often means a yeast overgrowth, which needs different treatment. In Ontario, diaper rash (diaper dermatitis) is a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess and prescribe for online.
Can a pharmacist prescribe for this?
A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your description and photos (clear photos help a lot) and, when it is clinically appropriate, can prescribe treatment for your child, or recommend an over-the-counter option. A prescription is never guaranteed - sometimes better barrier care is all that is needed, and sometimes the pharmacist will refer you to a doctor.
What helps in the meantime
Change diapers as soon as they are wet, rinse with warm water rather than scented wipes, pat dry, and apply a thick zinc-based barrier layer at every change. Some open-air time without a diaper each day genuinely speeds things up. Loosen the diaper fit so less rubs.
When to see a doctor instead
Have your child seen in person if the rash has blisters, open sores, pus, honey-coloured crusting or is spreading beyond the diaper area; if your child has a fever, is unusually sleepy or is feeding poorly; if the rash is not improving after about a week of treatment; or if your baby is under one month old. Any child who is very unwell, breathing abnormally or hard to rouse needs emergency care - call 911.
How to start
- Open the diaper rash assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
- A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews it and follows up within 24 business hours (our average is about 2 hours).
- If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.
Is it free?
The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.
