Corns and calluses are areas of thickened skin, usually from pressure or friction on the feet - common and often painful. In Ontario, corns and calluses are a minor ailment a pharmacist can assess and treat online, so you can get relief without a clinic visit.

What a pharmacist can treat

A pharmacist can assess a corn or callus and, when appropriate, prescribe or recommend treatment such as a salicylic-acid product to soften the thickened skin, along with padding and footwear advice to take the pressure off so it doesn't just come straight back.

When you'll be referred instead

Foot skin needs extra caution, and the assessment screens for it: if you have diabetes, peripheral vascular disease or poor circulation in your feet; any redness, inflammation, draining pus or signs of infection; or you've already used a salicylic-acid product for 10-14 days without improvement. In those cases you'll be directed to in-person foot care.

How to get assessed online in Ontario

1. Open the Calluses & corns assessment - a short, secure questionnaire (about 5 minutes).
2. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your answers.
3. If treatment is appropriate, they prescribe or recommend it and can send a prescription to the pharmacy of your choice.

Cost

The assessment is free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without one. Any prescribed medication is billed at its usual price, which your drug plan may cover.
