What reflux feels like
A burning sensation in the chest (often after meals or when lying down), a sour taste, regurgitation, and sometimes a persistent cough or hoarseness. Trigger foods, large meals, late eating, caffeine, alcohol, and stress commonly make it worse.
How a pharmacist can help
Start the acid reflux assessment. A licensed Ontario pharmacist reviews your symptoms and history and follows up - within 24 business hours (our average is about 2 hours). They can suggest practical changes and, when appropriate, prescribe or recommend treatment such as acid-reducing medication. They will also check that your symptoms fit reflux and not something that needs a doctor.
Cost
Free with a valid Ontario health card, or a flat $30 without. Treatment is provided only when the pharmacist judges it appropriate.
Warning signs that need a doctor or ER
Do not self-treat if you have trouble or pain when swallowing, unintended weight loss, vomiting blood or black/tarry stools, or ongoing symptoms despite treatment - these need medical assessment. And chest pain is not always heartburn: if you have chest pressure with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, call 911.
